January, February, and March are the Annual Create-Your-Own-Event Months on Chincoteague and Assateague. Each year at this time, the Chamber of Commerce and other participating community organizations refrain from offering too many events themselves in order to free up the local calendar for individuals who would like to make their own events on the islands.

According to Jim Teague, the Create-Your-Own-Event Coordinator, "We prefer small events that do not make it to the crime pages of the local newspapers. And any event that disturbs anyone or any of the wildlife will be cancelled immediately by the appropriate authorities." Teague added, "Philosophically speaking, the best events to organize during this very special season are events that look like, well, non-events. I mean, well, that's why people come out here this time of year, to get away from events."

When asked how an event organizer can get a planned event onto the official Create-Your-Own-Event Calendar, Teague responded, "We add them only when the event is over. Otherwise, how would we know that it was really an event?"
