Camping on Chincoteague & Assateague Islands

By popular demand, I'm including a little information on camping. And since doubters outnumber believers in this world, I've included an authentic-looking photo of myself camping on Chincoteague. My one piece of advice is that it's always better when the mosquitoes - that's a typical local example next to me - dine elsewhere; bring some repellent. My other piece of advice is to bring the repellent even if you plan to camp on the beach. Generally not so many mosquitoes, but If the wind is from the mainland, their cousins, biting flies often seek nourishment on the beach.

Chincoteague has a number of civilized campgrounds - see my listings. One, Tom's Cove Park, is on the water (Assateague Channel, facing Assateague Island), and another, Maddox Family Campground is fairly close to the entrance to Assateague Island.

If you do want to camp on the beach, you have a couple of options. The Assateague Island National Seashore has a campground on the northern end of Assateague in Maryland, and there is a Maryland state park campground next to it (links to their web sites are below). Both are about an hour's drive on the inland roads from Chincoteague (no beach campgrounds on the Virginia end of Assateague Island). You can also pick up a back-country camping permit (required) from the Park Service visitor centers on either end that allows you to use their special camping areas (two oceanside and four bayside) on the Maryland portion of Assateague, but you'll have to do some hiking with backpack or paddling to get there, and you have to depart by published times to make it to the sites before dark (see the National Seashore web site noted below). Simply camping where you like on the beach is not permitted.
