Henry Mallard has been to many places in the world and has strong opinions about them all.

If you have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) a meal at a Chincoteague restaurant in the last year, you are invited to post your opinion here. Of course, your opinion will not count as much as Henry Mallard's, but go ahead and post it anyway.

Henry will post your opinion in a couple of days below. Please be honest, but polite.

Opinion: My family is always sceptical about trying anything new, but I finally got my husband to try Saigon Village. Not your standard Chincoteague restaurant! The staff on both occasions was friendly and attentive (but not overly so), and the food is delicious - try the rice paper rolls!

Opinion: I thought about writing this for a while and finally decide to once I decided to include a few more details. My two kids and I ate at Bill’s in Chincoteague on Tuesday, August 28. We got there about 5:30 p.m. and were seated in a corner table by the exit door. At first I thought the table was fine as it had great views out of two large windows, one on the side and one at the front of the building. That was until I noticed the dead flies on the window sills. There were a total 33 dead flies on the two window sills – I know this because my10 year old son counted them for us. He then proceeded to kill four more flies while we ate. He killed them as they tried to land on our table. My kids liked their food and ate every last bit of it. I got the crab imperial. Unfortunately, it was not that good. It tasted like someone poured hot mayonnaise over a bunch of crab meat and tried to pass it off as crab imperial. Mayo was all I tasted – there was crab meat in the dish, but Mayo was the only taste that came through. Our server was very attentive and kept our drinks filled throughout our meal. We went to Bill’s based on a recommendation from the desk clerk at the Hampton Inn – I asked for a restaurant that was good for kids. The night before we ate at Steamers and we all really enjoyed it.

Opinion: Wait for breakfast was endless after we were seated. When we finally said something to Mr. Baldy he was rude and offensive. This is the 2nd time we have had an endless wait. We used to love it when it was Island Family Restaurant but we will not be back.

Opinion: Island Cafe-First time we ever had breakfast at this restaurant, which is ONLY open for breakfast. You gotta try the Grand Marnier French Toast. Absolutely delicious. Village Restaurant-First time visit to this restaurant also. Bill's used to be our favorite. Sorry, Bill, the Village has you beat now. A spectacular, huge seafood platter--including a lobster tail--($26.00) and worth every penny. We had enough left over for the next day's lunch, and then some. Mr. Baldy's-This used to be Island Family Restaurant, but I guess there are new owners. While the speed of service left much to be desired, the food was good. We had breakfast, and the wait staff and kitchen seemed to be a ball of confusion. We waited over 35 minutes for coffee and pancakes. We returned that evening for dinner, wanting something simple instead of the

Opinion: unfortunately some of the better restaurants of the island are no long there because they have sold out to folks who will build monstrous condos etc in their place. Of those, I offer the Crab House and Capt. Fish's. Soon to be gone is the Chincogeague Inn. These were great restaurants depending on what you were looking for. As for what is left--Don's and Bill's are both great places to eat as are AJ's and the Village. Unfortunately, if you want the whole mystic of Chincoteague dining, most of those restauarants have succumbed to progress. It will be difficult to get a seat in the remaining restaurants on the island--good or bad.

Opinion: Even though the restaurant is just off the island, it's worth the 10 minute drive. It had been 20+ years since I've eaten there. What a mistake! The seafood is excellant and the prices are reasonable. My husband and in-laws agreed this is one restaurant we will visit every time we come back to Chincoteague (which is at least once a year.) I highly recommend it!

Opinion: Our favorite spot in Chincoteague; we have never been disappointed. We prefer table #20, off on its own in an alcove - a nice intimate location to enjoy the fine food and company with whom you're sharing it. The food is always great. My wife loves the scallops in garlic sauce and the shrimp scampi. Our most recent trip was in the off season... we arrived at the bar late on Friday night in time to catch all the locals in action. A three-piece combo was playing classic rock in one corner. And despite our being easy-to-spot outsiders, we were welcomed warmly. We'll return over and over agin.

Opinion: I was very disappointed. I order the special which was tuna. I ordered it blacked and rare. It came out cooked all the way through. They sent another tuna that was just seared on the edges (as it should have been) and it was frozen/cold in the middle. It was obviously not fresh tuna!

Opinion: Finally got to eat at Ray Shanty. I got the crab cake platter and my wife got the sea scallop platter. My crab cakes were among the best I’ve ever had!! Each was nearly five inches wide and about an inch thick and were 99% crabmeat! My wife scallops were lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. We both had their cream of crab soup, which was very good. I highly recommend eating at Ray’s!!

Restaurant: Captian Fish
Date Dined: Sept 3, 2004
Opinion: Should be Captian "sleeps with the fishes". It took 20 minutes to get a waitresses attention. It took 45 minutes to get our first round of drinks. It took an hour to get our appetizers. As for the entrees...I can only guess that by "fresh seafood" they mean that after I ordered, they sent the boat out to catch the fish. When I spoke with the manager she apologized and talked about staffing. Well, sparky, perhaps you need to drag yourself into the kitchen then, begin to expadite and get those busboys to start toasting some bread and serving some fried fish. Afterall, it mainly is nothing but FRIED food. How tough can that be? And yes, the club sandwich my daughter ordered was not toasted. Yum! Soggy sandwich bread. But no, after the table next to us reported a 1 hour wait to get 4 fried fish sandwiches we called it a day... Oh, and when you fry something, perhaps you need to roll it in something besides plan breadcrumbs. Tasteless and tough apps. Be afriad, be very afriad to approach this place.

Opinion: Long wait at Bill's, so we strolled across the street "just to see if wait at the Inn." Aferall it is Firday night of Labor Day weekend. It should have been a clue: the place empty despite the waterfront location and pending sunset (broken window seals and moisture obscured the view afterall). Cocktails order on the rock, arrived straight-up, complete with a fly. Replacement was weak and tasteless. Corn muffins were good. However, request for a second basket was met with "only one basket per table." Meals arrived after a very long wait (were there other people here, oh yes 3 or 4 table, now). One meal did not arrive with the others and when it did, it was undercooked. We should have gone to Bill's. Hopefully, someone will take over what could be a wonderful place.

Restaurant: The Star Fish
Date Dined: 6/28
Opinion: From the approach from parking lot the place looked iffy, but gave it a go. Very surprised - the Starfish is one of Chincoteague's best kept secrets. Food is healthy - greens are very fresh, unlike a restaurant I dare not mention that is very close by who used a type of lettuce for their salad bar I would only dare use as a platter garnish. The food in my opinion was good enough to be served in any of your finer DC establishments as lite lunch fare, al fresco. A lot of attention to detail to make sure the herbs and spices are just right. Delicate tasting chicken salad and exquisite Tuscan potato salad with just a light hint of vinegar and fresh parsley are some of the high points. Portions were moderate. Very refreshing ice cold bottled Perrier and natural spring waters were available. Once you place your order, sit in the courtyard behind the place that is hidden from the street, and if you've ever been to the Caribean, you will be delighted by the colors and the music. The decor is authentic bright Dominican/Cuban/Puerto Rican colors, which were used on the fencing and outdoor dining furnishings.

Opinion: Atmosphere - 10 Food - 10 Prices - very reasonable for what you are getting. Service - 10 EJ's is a very romantic, well run establishment. House wines are very good quality. Staff very attentive, friendly, unobtrusive, and graciously accommodating, right down to preparing a special meal for a vegetarian friend. Felt a little rushed, but we showed up very late almost to kitchen closing time. Wish their kitchen was open just a little later, but I'm used to DC dining hours.

Date Dined: August 2002 and many others
Opinion: I remember when this was a chicken place called McDuffy's, but for years now this has been our favorite Chincoteague restaurant. It's got an odd charm, a tiny bit formal but not too formal for the beach, and tables for families with children can be found on the screened porch. The menu contains items not found at every other place on the island and almost everything is excellent. I'd suggest Oysters Rockefeller or crab-stuffed mushroms for a start, and then scampi or crab alfredo for an entree. Usually good service, especially if you come later or early. We tend to spend the day walking or bike riding, what we call "earning scampi," before A.J.'s and then later for Mr. Whippy's. And so it's "earning scampi and whippy" for us.
